Some additional Information:

I am experiencing the refresh problem with explorer on XP Pro
also. I've discovered that the XP client sometimes creates
(why?) a hidden/system file named "desktop.ini" on the
network share when is first attaches. XP then monitors and
refreshes this file quite often (every second?) creating an
inordinate amount of SMB traffic between the client and the
server. The placement of this "desktop.ini" seems arbitrary
and "desktop.ini" seems to hold info for the explorer shell.

There are many tech docs on the XP "desktop.ini" file -
haven't had time to read them yet...

This packet capture shows 3 SMB frames: the creation
attempt, response, and then query: (.113 is xp client, .13 is
server)

179 1.265553 0002555609F8 IBM 579420 SMB C NT create & X,
File = \My Pictures\desktop.ini xxx.xxx.xxx.113
xxx.xxx.xxx.13 IP

180 1.265553 IBM 579420 0002555609F8 SMB R NT create & X,
FID = 0xf00e xxx.xxx.xxx.13 xxx.xxx.xxx.113 IP

181 1.265553 0002555609F8 IBM 579420 SMB C transact2 Query
file info, FID = 0xf00e xxx.xxx.xxx.113 xxx.xxx.xxx.13 IP

When the "desktop.ini" files are deleted from the server
share, the explorer refreshing stops. The file and refresh
starts again when you re-attach to a share or logout/logback
on...

Hope this helps you along the way.
